Gordon L. Schwartz, age 83, of Reedsburg, died unexpectedly on Monday, April 20, 2009 in the Reedsburg Area Medical Center. He was born on February 15, 1926 in the Town of Woodland, Sauk County, the son of Earl and Alice (Hochmuth) Schwartz. Gordon attended Reedsburg High School, served in the U.S. Army (Spending time in Paris) and attended Layton Art School in Milwaukee. He married Jane E. Faber on September 1, 1949 at St. Killian’s Catholic Church in Bear Valley. Their marriage was blessed with five children. Gordon was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served on the church building committee and was a member of the church choir for many years. He owned his own painting business for more than 40 years, developing close relationships with clients and fellow tradesmen. He enjoyed World War II history, bird watching, making firewood, fishing, hunting and considered deer season “the best time of the year.” He will be remembered by family and friends as a colorful story teller. He is survived by four children: Jean Schwartz, of Reedsburg; Debra (John) Muchow, of Reedsburg; Susan (Craig) Schappe, of Madison and Sid (Julie) Schwartz, of Beloit; seven grandchildren: Nathan, Jacob and James Muchow; Eric and Tyler Schappe; Angelica and Monica Schwartz; and one brother: Ivan (Erna) Schwartz, of Reedsburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; one daughter: Virginia (Bill) Zinn and one sister: Frey (Hilbert) Pierce. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:30 A.M. on Friday, April 24, 2009 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH in Reedsburg with Father Thomas Monaghan officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in the Town of Winfield with military rites conducted by the Reedsburg V.F.W. The family will receive friends from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday at the HOOF FUNERAL HOME in Reedsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic School Endowment Fund. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
