Barbara Jo Rooney Griffin, of Reedsburg, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, after 58 years of a wonderful life. She was surrounded by her beloved children and loving family and in her husband’s arms. Barb was born on March 27th, 1951 in the small farming community of Seneca, Illinois to Luella and Bernard Rooney. She grew up playing in backyards with her sister, Patty, and two brothers, Tom and Terry. She spent her days riding bikes, playing with dolls, and in the evenings would catch lightening bugs in the front yards while the Moms discussed the trials of the day. Barb started Seneca High School in 1965 at a time before girls could participate in high school sports. So, her high school years were filled with cheerleading, clubs, studies, dances and slumber parties. Friday nights after the big basketball games she would get together with everyone for a coke and fries at the Busy Bee downtown. Barb graduated from high school in the tumultuous year of 1969, and that fall, upon the sheer determination of her mother that all of her children get a college education, she began college at Illinois State University. The climate of politics, war protests, grassroots activist groups, and rock and roll during her four years in college forever formulated her political and social ideals to which she held true to all of her life. After graduation from ISU in 1973, Barb launched her teaching career in Houston, Texas. Her field of choice was Middle School science. In the next seven years she taught in Texas, Illinois and Wisconsin. She loved creating challenging curriculum that would peak the curiosity of her students while holding them to high standards of achievement. Middle school students were always her favorites and she derived great personal gratification from being a part of their lives. The happiest years of Barb’s life began in 1981 when she married her husband, Jerry, moved to Reedsburg, bought a house and started their own family. Barb and Jerry were blessed with two wonderful children, Patrick in 1982 and Kelsey in 1988. She was able to be a stay at home Mom and loved to laugh, explore, play and teach her children. She felt that being a Mom was her greatest achievement. She felt blessed with having a husband with a full time job, owning a home with a backyard and having loving relationships with family and friends. There was no greater moment than stargazing together with her husband beside a campfire with children fast asleep on sleeping bags in the backyard. She considered the years of 1981 through 1996 the absolute golden years of her life. In 1996, she was hired by the Reedsburg School District and taught full time for the next ten years at Webb Middle School as the eighth grade earth science teacher. Teaching was not only an inspiration for her to be a part of, but a deeply gratifying career in which she got to explore the inquisitive minds of 13 year old adolescents. She was a dedicated teacher who could deliver a lecture, create a lab, and teach a lesson with humor and expertise. She held her students as well as her fellow teachers in high esteem. She was preceded in death by her father, Bernard Rooney. She is survived by her mother, Luella Rooney; her husband, Jerry; two children: Patrick and Kelsey; her sister and brother-in-law: Patty and David Osborne; her brother and sister-in-law: Terry and Carol Rooney; her brother and sister-in-law: Tom and Laura Rooney; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. She will fondly be remembered for her love of laughter and family and friends. She lived her life to the fullest and is eternally grateful for all the many blessings that she received during her lifetime. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH in Reedsburg with Father Lorin Bowens officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in the Town of Winfield. The family will receive friends from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Monday at the HOOF FUNERAL HOME in Reedsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Barb Griffin Science Education Scholarship Fund would be appreciated. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
