James M. Horkan, age 63, of Reedsburg, died on Monday, September 21, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. He was born on November 17, 1945 in Reedsburg, the son of Harry and Norah (Diener) Horkan. After recovering from a wrestling accident during his junior year, Jim returned to graduate from Webb High School. He attended UW Richland and later graduated from UW Platteville. On August 3, 1974, he was married to the former Carol J. Aide. Jim worked as Personnel Director at First Federal Savings and Loan in Madison for 17 years. He was active in the Madison Central Lions Club and the Monona Jaycees for many years. Jim was always very civic minded and was active in improving conditions for people with disabilities. He will be remembered as an example and inspiration to many having lived his life as a quadriplegic for over 46 years. In 1970, George Martin, head wrestling coach for UW Madison, established an award in Jim's honor to be given each year to an outstanding Reedsburg wrestler for dedication, determination, academics and civic involvement. In 1996, Jim and his family returned to the Reedsburg area. He enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing and camping. Survivors include his wife, Carol; two children: Joshua and Alicia Horkan, both of Reedsburg; three brothers: Patrick (Jean) Horkan, of Lime Ridge; John (June) Horkan, of Lyndon Station and Peter Horkan, residing at the Veterans Home in Tomah; nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father and mother-in-law: Wilford and Kathleen Aide. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:30 A.M. on Friday, September 25, 2009 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH in Reedsburg with Father Thomas Monaghan officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in the Town of Winfield. The family will receive friends from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday at the HOOF FUNERAL HOME in Reedsburg where a parish rosary will be prayed at 7:30 P.M.
