Vera Evelyn (Bass) Pelton, age 88, of Reedsburg, died on Monday, January 23, 2017 at Our House Assisted Living in Reedsburg on her husband's birthday. She was born on a farm in the Township of Dellona, Sauk County, the fourth child of Percy and Hazel (Dryer) Bass. The family soon moved to another farm in Dellona and then to the farm in the Township of Winfield that became the Bass Family Farm. When her brother took over the farm, she moved into Reedsburg with her parents. Vera was a graduate of Reedsburg High School and the Sauk County Teachers College. She took a job at Glen Valley School which was on the Pelton family homestead. One day when she could not get the door open she went to the farmhouse for help and one of the Pelton sons, Keith, helped her open the door. They married in 1949 and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary before Keith died in 2010. At first they lived on the Pelton homestead, then in 1951 they bought their own farm just over the hill. They farmed there until Keith's death where Vera stayed until she decided to go to Our House in 2014. She loved Our House, its staff, residents and their families. Vera enjoyed spending time with her family including breakfasts or coffee with her sisters and sisters-in-law. In later years, after they had all retired Vera, her three siblings and their spouses had breakfast together once a week. She also had many cherished friendships with women she had grown up with, her church friends and women from the neighborhood. Vera loved to read, do jigsaw puzzles and word puzzles. She also loved to write letters and send greeting cards. On the farm she had two large gardens in which she canned and froze large amounts of fruits and vegtables each summer. She baked amazing pies and chocolate chip cookies. Vera did volunteer work with disabled children and she also volunteered at the Reedsburg Hospital and at area nursing homes. She was a member of the Reedsburg United Methodist Church and was co-chair of the funeral luncheon and rummage sale committees until she was 80 years old. She also liked working in the church library and with the project group. She is survived by her five children and their families: Jill Streekstra; Jane (Jim) Leverance; Nye C. (Christy) Pelton and their children: Sarah, Nye S., Anna, Joseph, Bethany and Evelyn; Joe (Jill) Pelton, and their son: Brock; Peter (Laurie) Pelton, and their daughters: Jenna (Adrian) Cook and Kayla (Nate) Lund; one great granddaughter: Avery Cook; sisters and brothers-in law: Esther Massey, Jim and Ardel Pelton, Lee and Bev Pelton; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith; her siblings and their spouses: Dorothy (Ken) Holt, Charles (Irene) Bass and Blanche (John) Keller; her in-laws: Monte (Ginny) Pelton, Walter Pelton, Elderine Brooks, Lewis Massey, Marian (Darrel) Higgins and Kathy Pelton; nieces and nephew: Jan Holt VanWormer, Dick Bass, Nan Pelton Schmeider and Sharon Higgins Schweitzer. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Reedsburg with Pastor Marvin Singh officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg and after 10:00 A.M. on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the United Methodist Church – Project Group or the Friends of The Library would be appreciated. The Hoof Funeral Home in serving the family.
