Michael Joseph Hickey, 77, of Bemidji, Minnesota, formerly of Reedsburg, was born on May 14, 1939 in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. The son of Walter and Mary Elizabeth (Beth) (nee Peterson) Hickey. Mike was a 1957 graduate of Webb High and earned a degree in Industrial Technology at Stout State in Menomonie, Wisconsin in 1962. Mike married Alice Ann Phelan on December 31, 1960 in Menomonie. Together they had four children, Dennis, Elizabeth, Michael Joseph, and Timothy. Mike started his 30-year career with IBM in January of 1962. Together the family moved 13 times throughout his career, including New York, Iowa, North Dakota, Minnetonka, Minnesota, River Falls, Wisconsin, and Zumbrota, Minnesota. Mike retired from IBM in 1992 and the Hickeys moved back to Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Mike established Hickey Electric, which he operated for ten years. Mike served on the planning commission for Fargo, ND, and as a councilman for the city of Reedsburg. In 2001, Mike was voted Irishman of the Year by the South Central Shamrock Club. After retiring from the electrical company in 2002, Mike and Alice purchased a home on Big Wolf Lake outside of Bemidji, Minnesota. Mike was happy to provide a place where his family could come and be together. Over the years, Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. The family has fond memories of all the years spent fishing at Four Seasons Resort in Bena, Minnesota. Mike loved teaching his grandchildren how to fish, as well as pulling them on skis and inner tubes behind the fishing boat. He was loved dearly by his family and will be greatly missed. Mike was confined to a nursing home as the result of a stroke in 2007, and went peacefully in his sleep on March 15, 2017. He is survived by his wife: Alice; daughter: Elizabeth (Thomas) Gunderson; son: Timothy (Sherry) Hickey; grandchildren, Megan (Ben) Hagar, Devon (David) Moser, Molly (Dustin) Bune, Brennan Hickey and Bryan Hickey; great-granddaughter: Brooke Moser; brothers, John (Lois) Hickey, and Marty (Dianne) Hickey. Mike was preceded in death by his parents: Walt and Beth; sons: Dennis and Joe. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12 noon on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg with Father David Carrano officiating. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery in the Township of Dellona at a later date. There will be a visitation from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Wounded Warrior Project would be appreciated. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
