John W. Bernien, age 94, of Reedsburg, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the Sauk County Health Care Center surrounded by his family. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict. On June 17, 1950, he was married to the former Kathryn L. Patton. After military service John joined the Bernien Company, becoming a fourth generation member in the family business. He remained with the Bernien Company until it closed in 1986. John followed his father's legacy of community service by serving on various boards and committees including Reedsburg Hospital Foundation, Sauk County Board of Supervisors, Reedsburg Lions - Charter member, Reedsburg Country Club - Treasurer and President, St. Peter's Lutheran Church - Treasurer and Chairman, and the city of Reedsburg as alderman and eighteen years as Mayor. John received the Reedsburg Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award and was recognized as one of Reedsburg's Founding Families. He enjoyed golf and wood working in his free time and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and stockholder. He especially enjoyed reminiscing with niece Sherry Bernien and friend Greg Westerman. Survivors include two daughters: Mary (Bob) Vethe and Nancy (Rodney) Powell, both of Reedsburg; his son-in-law: Rob Wallace; four grandchildren: Chad (Ange) Thompson, Corey Thompson, and his fiancee, Lindsey, Ryan (Betsy) Wallace and Chelsea Wallace; seven great grandchildren: Connor, Collin, Kai, Addison, Grant, Meta and Maggie; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay; his daughter: Janis Wallace and his brother: Eldor (Clarice) Bernien. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church in Reedsburg with Pastor Paul Crolius officiating. The family wishes to thank the staff of Sauk County Health Care Center for their care and compassion and Pastor Crolius for his spiritual guidance. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Peter's Lutheran Church would be appreciated. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
