James R. "Jim" Backes, age 64, of rural Cazenovia, died tragically in a truck accident on Monday, July 23, 2018. He was born on July 21, 1954 in Milwaukee, the son of Daniel and Doris (Laufer) Backes. Jim grew up in Mequon and started working out of high school at Piggly Wiggly, Ernie von Schledorn, Banner Welding and finally with Koenig Industries. He started in the shop as a machinist and ended up in Cazenovia managing the corporate farm with his wife, Ellen. His love for farming started with the Laufer family farm in West Bend with his Uncle Gene and Aunt Glenda. He and the former Ellen Ratzer were married on May 26, 1984. He arguably was the most selfless, life-loving person. You did not need to be Backes blood to be treated like one of the family. As a family we lost a loving husband and big brother. Jim looked out for everybody and had a big heart. Many knew him as "Big Jim" and we are truly broken with his loss. Jim met his fate doing what he loved...working on the farm. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jim will also be remembered as a mountain of a man with an incredible mind, hilarious stories and a warm heart. Survivors include his wife: Ellen; five brothers: Jeff (Sue), of Cedarburg; Pete (Danielle), of North Mankato, MN; Mark (Cindy), of Elcho; Doug (Kath), of Lincoln, RI and Dave (Wendy), of Salina, KS; his mother-in-law: Gertrude Ratzer, of Mauston; nieces and nephews who he loved and guided as his own; his constant companion, Schotzie; many other close friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law: Fritz Ratzer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 3, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg with Father David Carrano officiating. There will be a visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg where a Knight of Columbus rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. There will also be a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Knights of Columbus - Monsignor Condon Chapter 3805 or the Reedsburg Food Pantry would be appreciated. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
