Merle Harold Groener, age 92, of Reedsburg, died on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Casa de Oakes in Reedsburg. He was born on January 3, 1927 in Baraboo, the son of Eric and Margaret (Bauer) Groener. Merle attended Sunny Hills School and Sunshine Valley School. He loved to work and started at Woods Nursery in the 6th grade picking strawberries and hoeing. He worked for Paul Toeder the summer between 7th and 8th grades and for a couple of months after the 8th grade. Merle then worked for Paul Sparks and was taken into the Sparks home to live with the family. At the age of 18, he received greetings from the Department of the Army and reported to Camp Robinson for basic training. He served in the army from March 1945 until November 1946. Merle served in the Philippines with the Signal Service Corps and working in the motor pool in occupied Tokyo, Japan. When he came back to the states, he again worked driving for Paul Sparks. He took over the trucking business after Paul passed away until his retirement in 1991. Merle continued driving for other trucking companies for another 10 years. He then worked for Koenecke Ford until 2011. Merle married the former Lorena Hasz on August 4, 1951 and they had two children. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where he faithfully ushered for over 50 years and he was the epitome of "with food and raiment let us be therewith content." However, he was happier when the Cubs, Packers and Badgers won. Merle enjoyed playing cards and bowling especially when he had a 244 game. Survivors include his wife: Lorena; his daughter: Sandy (Tim) Sweeney, of Sherwood, Arkansas; his daughter-in-law: Priscilla Groener, of Reedsburg; five grandchildren: Laurie (Darren) Snyder, of Lutz, FL; Angela Sweeney, of West Bend; Jennifer (Ali) Pervaiz, of Milwaukee; Adam (Amy) Groener, of Mount Horeb and Christian Groener, of Necedah; six great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son: Ronald; four sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, May 17, 2019 at St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church in Reedsburg with Pastor Paul Crolius officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery with military honors provided by the Reedsburg Area Veterans Honor Guard. There will be a visitation after 9:30 A.M. on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Peter's Lutheran Church would be appreciated. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
