Joseph B. "Uncle Joe" Tibbitts, age 95, of Reedsburg, died on Friday, August 2, 2019 at the Veterans Home in King. He was born on July 24, 1924 in Reedsburg, the fifth son of Eugene and Ima (Hastings) Tibbitts. Joe was a 1942 graduate of Reedsburg High School. He enlisted into the Army Air Corps in November 1942 and retired from the U. S. Air Force in August 1967 with a total of 25 years of active military service. During World War II, Joe landed on Normandy and subsequently Bronze Service Stars for the following campaigns: Northern France, Rhineland, Southern France and Central Europe. After he retired from the military, he returned home and worked for the City of Reedsburg in the Maintenance Department. He was also a volunteer fireman and fought the Woolen Mill Fire in April 1968. When he retired from the City of Reedsburg, he "wanted an inside job where it was warm" and he became a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Sauk County Health Care Center. Joe lived at the family home on S. Dewey Avenue until the death of his parents. In 2014, he moved to the Veterans Home in King, Wisconsin. He is survived by his younger brother: Dr. James Tibbitts; his sister-in-law: Carol Tibbitts (wife of George); amazing friends: Ken and Mary Coashes; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Tom, Bob, Doug and George and his nephew: Earl Tibbitts. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg with Chaplain Rich Engle officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Reedsburg Area High School Special Olympics. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
